While I prefer the watch without the date magnifier for actually reading the date, I can’t quite get used to a Datejust without the Cyclops on the crystal. I’ve made an appointment to have the crystal replaced, and I plan on keeping the original as a back-up. This is my first Rolex with a jubilee bracelet, and I really like it. Is it possible to get the non cyclops crystal from the Submariner No-Date 41mm and have it replaced on the Date? Currently, the only Rolex watch featuring a date but without a Cyclops lens is the Deepsea, which, considering its 3,900m water-resistance and the ultra-thick crystal on top, makes it impossible to have such a magnifier over the date – until Rolex finds the solution and gives the watch the same feature as the rest of the collection. There was no cyclops magnifier in the crystal at this time – that would be another Rolex first, introduced on the Datejust in 1955. You'll notice that the name Datejust doesn't actually appear on the dial anywhere; instead we have a "Rolex / Oyster Perpetual" signature at 12 o'clock and the "Chronometre" indication at 6 o'clock.
The very first Rolex Datejust watches were produced without the equally-famous cyclops magnifier over the date. Legend has it that Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf’s wife complained of not being able to read the date, and that was what inspired the invention and addition of the x2.5 lens. The two Rolex models that feature a date function but no Cyclops are the Sea-Dweller 4000 and the Deepsea. Shown in the close up photo above, the Sea-Dweller 4000 is the closest you can get to a Submariner Date with no magnification lens.
Yes, you could either get a Rolex crystal with or without a cyclops on that, and no it doesn’t have to be from an AD. L.A. Watchworks is a really good reputable source. They could replace the crystal in just a few days.
The date window is most commonly found as an aperture at 3 o’clock or 6 o’clock, and sometimes with a magnifying glass over it like a generous water drop on the crystal (called a “cyclops” in watch jargon).
But only ALMOST: The very first Datejusts had NO cyclops but was the first Rolex to have a window cut out in the dial showing the date (intro: 1945). The cyclops was added as STANDARD on the DJ's around 1954. Also, notice there is no Cyclops date magnifier on this first Datejust. Rolex first introduced the Cyclops magnifier lens feature on the Datejust model at Basel Fair in 1948. The name Cyclops came from the mythological Greek one-eyed monster.
